On 10 April 1944, Easter Monday, Armando’s partisans occupied Fanano and attacked the Carabinieri barracks, where there were also eight members of Mussolini’s National Guard. After a fight lasting about twenty minutes, the partisans broke into the barracks, immobilised the Carabinieri and guardsmen and took away clothing, documents, weapons and ammunition. The National Guardsmen were stripped to their underwear and told to go home; the two Carabinieri were not touched.
